A Breakthrough Solution for Wire, Cable & Tube Surface Defect Detection
Eric Nogues, Technical Sales Engineer at CERSA-MCI, Cabries, France, reports, “For many years, manufacturers have been offering measuring devices based on noncontact laser measurement for geometric monitoring of wire and cable. The measurement of the outer diameter, the calculation of the ovality and the detection of shape defects such as lumps and necks are part of the classical measurements.
“As diameters become smaller and speeds faster, many devices are limited in performance by their technology. An even more difficult technical challenge is the inspection of the surface appearance and detection of surface defects on cylindrical products during production. Measuring techniques and equipment do exist, but they are often either dedicated to off -line measurement of samples or for in-line measurements, but at diameters of several mm or even cm and at low speeds.
