Enhancing Efficiency and Quality in High-Speed Optical Cable Manufacturing Through AI-Driven Process Control
Smart Buffering delivers improvements in product quality, operational efficiency and material savings.
Abstract
High-speed optical cable secondary coating lines have traditionally relied on process automation systems operated by humans, a practice that can introduce inefficiencies and human error. To address these challenges, an Artificial Intelligence (AI) driven process control system, Smart Buffering, has been developed. Smart Buffering operates on top of existing automation layers, automating critical tasks and decision making processes traditionally performed by operators. This paper presents the deployment and operational success of the Smart Buffering system in a real-world production environment, detailing its ability to optimize manufacturing processes, improve product quality, increase uptime and predict maintenance needs. Results from the deployment at a cable manufacturing facility show a more stable process, superior product quality and significant material savings, contributing to reduced waste and a more sustainable production cycle. This paper also discusses the future of AI in manufacturing, the evolving role of operators, and the broader impact of AI driven optimization on the industry.
